Modern Leadership in the Time of Climate Crisis

Ghost Article for Scott Lomu, Brand President of Element United Modern leadership in the time of climate change indicates that our roles are filled with even greater awareness, collaboration, and demand. So, while traditional leaders strive to enact meaningful transformations for businesses and communities by challenging the status quo, taking risks, and pushing for significant change, these roles have taken on a complex landscape of environmental policies and sustainable practices.

While the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has given us just over a decade to limit global warming by 1.5 degrees Celsius to avoid catastrophic consequences, the latest estimates show that the planet is on a faster trajectory towards a disastrous 2.0 degrees Celsius rise in global temperatures.

Failure to understand how a 1.5-degree Celsius global temperature increase will impact our businesses can disrupt operations and cause our values to decline. Inaction today could even lead to the complete shutdown of our operations tomorrow.

As modern leaders, let's recognize the risks of climate change and measure how and where to facilitate sustainable impact within our internal governance and external business structures.

  • As global temperatures rise, the risk of extreme weather events, such as heatwaves, storms, floods, and droughts, increases. These events can lead to loss of life, displacement of workforce populations, and economic disruption.

  • Warming beyond 1.5 degrees Celsius could lead to the collapse of ecosystems, loss of biodiversity, and extinction of many plant and animal species. This would have cascading effects on human wellness, livelihoods, food security, and the planet's overall health.

  • Melting ice sheets and glaciers contribute to rising sea levels, which can cause coastal flooding and erosion, affecting millions of people who live in coastal areas.

  • Higher temperatures and increased carbon dioxide levels lead to ocean acidification and deoxygenation, which can devastate marine ecosystems and disrupt global fisheries.

  • Global warming can exacerbate water scarcity and negatively affect crop yields, leading to food shortages and increasing the risk of malnutrition and famine.

  • Climate change can, directly and indirectly, impact human health, from heat stress and the spread of vector-borne diseases to reduced air quality and increased risks of food- and water-borne illnesses.

So as we weigh the immediate costs of adapting to and mitigating the impacts of climate change in business, let's expand that thought further into the future when our children are left to manage the economic burden of inadequate action.

Still, it is not just about the economics of things. Modern leadership roles require navigation from the community's perspective and prioritize efforts to mitigate the impacts of climate change, particularly for and because of our most vulnerable societies and our families.

To mitigate the worst effects of climate change, immediate, ambitious action is needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, transition to a low-carbon economy, and invest in adaptation and resilience measures.

Achieving this goal requires cooperation, innovative solutions, and a commitment to sustainable development. To move towards a low-carbon future, infrastructure must transition away from fossil fuels and toward renewable energy sources, but we can't do it alone. Collaboration with governments, peers, and communities to tackle the impacts of climate change together is needed.

Our challenge is now, and we have a vital role in ensuring a sustainable future and solving these challenges. Engage with your peers today and invite them to a roundtable. Collaborate so that your business community fully understands the most critical concerns and how to mitigate the changes already happening but also prevent the most harmful impacts.

Let's embrace our new role as modern leaders in the time of climate change and secure a livable future for our children and their future generations.
